The major mountains of North Wales comprise the following mountain ranges:
  • Arans near Bala or Dolgellau
  • Arenigs near Bala
  • Berwyns near Bala or Llangollen
  • Cadair Idris near Dolgellau and Bala
  • Carneddau near Bethesda
  • Glyders near Llanberis and Betwys-y-Coed
  • Hirnants near Bala
  • Moel Hebog near Beddgelert
  • Moelwyns near Blanneau FFestioniog and Beddgelert
  • Rhinogs near Dolgellau, Barmouth or Bala
  • Snowdon near Llanberis, Betwys-y-Coed or Beddgelert

This follows the structure used by many guidebooks, e.g. Peter Hermon, John and Anne Nuttall. Apart from the Berwyns all of the mountain ranges are in the Snowdonia National Park.

Accommodation

An ideal base is Bala which is surrounded by three mountain ranges (Aran, Arenig and Berwyn) while Cader Idris the Rhinogs are a short drive away and other parts of Snowdonia (Snowdon, Glyders, etc) are readily accessible.

The Bala Challenge

A charity walk around Bala Lake, through forests, over moorland with wonderful views and opportunity to see wildlife.
